I've been planning for a while to buy a barcode scanner to get my book collection on my computer to better organize my library. This may sound like a ridiculously geeky idea to some people. But let me just explain that I have floor to ceiling bookshelves spanning approximately 20 feet of wall space in my living room, a four shelf cookbook shelf in my kitchen, and a three shelf bookshelf in my bedroom, and yet not all of my books are on shelves. I have a LOT of books. And the biggest problem I run into is coming across a book and thinking, "Oh, I should get that. It sounds neat." Only to get home and discover I already owned it, but had lost it in the huge pile of books. My hope was to get the library better organized to better track what I own, avoid duplicates, and also better track when I loan books to other people.
A long time ago, someone had pointed me to the Intelliscanner product, a Mac-friendly barcode scanner with software for tracking your library. I've had a bookmark to it for a while, and have had it on the backburner of "things to buy". I think it just got moved to the front of the list. Why, might you ask? Because recent updates to the software include...*drumroll please*...automatic sync to a Palm.
I'm officially in love. And I know what I'm spending my Christmas money on. (And now I have to finish bracing the bookshelves and painting them, as well as going through the last of the boxes in the house, so I can properly put the scanned library away. Whee!)

Everyone makes fun of me because I have my Shakespeare scripts in order of production date....My CD's are just plain alphabetical, but I've always had trouble with regular scripts because I can't remember who wrote what most of the time.
Yeah, I gotta get me some of that...
And I had a revelation. "If your apartment were to burn down, you'd stand to lose about $40k-$50k in DVD investment. Your insurance company is going to want *some* sort of list of what you lost. You should make one of your DVDs."
So, I pulled out Access and started a database. At first, just the titles. Then I thought, 'You may as well but the retail value since that's what the insurance people will want'. Then I thought, "Go ahead and put all the info. You might be curious one day'. Then the ugly thought, 'You *could* add genre to your records'. At this point all rationality was lost and I also created and labeled my DVDs with my own call number system. (Did I mention that I'm a librarian).
Nicole saw your post and began to mutter "The perfect gift, the perfect gift, . . . ." over and over again.
As one friend of ours put it, "Wow! She managed to find a gift that feeds into *all* of your obsessive/compulsive tendencies at once!'
Its way cool. Now I just need to buy a USB adapter and the Sorting shall begin!

Trivia: David Bowie used to tour with a library of 5000 of his favorite books during his Ziggy Stardust days. He'd have them unloaded into every single hotel room. I admire that.
*friending you* because it must be destiny.
